| The sun in your eyes is more than a nuisance. It is a danger to healthy eyes. For years, we bought cheap sunglasses to protect us from the "glare" of sunlight, or to achieve a "glamorous" look. Although many of these "tinted " sunglasses cut down on the amount of sunlight entering the eyes, they also caused the pupils to dilate, permitting more of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays to enter the eye. Today, we know that UV rays can damage not only our skin but also our eyes. In fact, UV rays are one reason why the natural lens of the eye changes with age, from a clear, crystalline structure to an opaque condition called a cataract-a major cause of blindness in the elderly. Severe UV exposure can also damage the retina, leading to serious eye diseases such as macular degeneration. High quality sunglasses that block out UV rays and protect your eyes from glare are vital to preserve your vision. Additional benefit is gained by the superior optics of a high quality sun lens versus a "cheap" pair. "Cheap Sunglass lenses can actually induce eyestrain which leads to headaches due to the poor optic quality of the lenses. Fortunately, eyewear manufacturers recognize the problem.
